What are the benefits of a diverse and inclusive PLN in social media sharing that understands where you are coming from with messaging that impacts the community?
A diverse and inclusive PLN is an open space for people to sharing opinions about certain topic. As Jansen points out that “people come in as participants and leave recognizing themselves as members of a public— a group of people commonly affected by an issue.” This is how the way of uniting a diverse and inclusive PLN. Because people in the community are affected by an issue, people could share their points of view on the same topic. We are making statements that will resonate with some people. At the same time, other people with different views will also share their views, leading to a discussion. In the process, our ideas will be explored by a group of people and thus be extended and refined. By commutating in the PLN, not only we get different insights that can be added to our ideas, but our ideas also could be spread by others who think the same.
When sharing our messaging, it is also important to consider our audiences. Form our messages that fit our audience usually get more discussions on our ideas. For example, if our audience are more successful and authoritative people, the message we post need to be credible and write it more officially.
Through doing research on MARKIEL SIMPSON, he did a lot preparations before becoming education activist and member of the B.C. Community Alliance. First, he started to build connections with members of black community, and doing researches. Then, he builded connections with people who has same objectives, so that he got invited to join bc community alliance and starting his whole journey of anti-racism. As his network grows with being active in some events and anti-racism campaign, as he said everything happened naturally, he became a member of ndp. From his experience, what I can take away is that he builded a diverse and inclusive PLN, and utilize it to develop his career of anti-racism.

Hello Shanshan, very nicely written blog. When you talk about Jansen’s video, it reminds me of the concept of “public discourse”, public discourse is where people coming in a discourse to share their thoughts of a public issue. Everyone have their rights to speak up their opinions on issues that may affect their well-being. But, the way I see it is that, the public discourse is still dominated by West, upper-class and men. An issue will more likely to become a public issue if the issue affects the West, upper-class and men. Consider the Aboriginal women missing in Canada, is this a severe social issue? It certainly is. But it is not discussed enough in public discourse, the power relation marginalize some social issues from the public discourse.

Great post. I agree that social media can help us learn new things, reach across time and geography, and have a broad and far-reaching impact. For example, social media can give you the ability to communicate in both directions, so you can access and share relevant information more frequently, more accurately, and in real time, and engage with a larger audience at the same time. Of course, this requires transparency and openness, the courage to share challenges and successes, and the willingness to provide feedback to anyone.
